Character profiles

We gave our actors each a copy of the character profile, as well as a script each, in order to help them understand their parts better, and hopefully act to the best of their abilities

Edgar: Edgar is a teenage boy attending school. He doesn’t make much of an effort to stand out or excel academically, but dose enough to get by. He has a good social life and enjoys hanging out with mates, especially Derrick. He lives at home with his mum, and is quite content with his life. However Edgar is schizophrenic. This means he hears, sees and talks to a delusion, named Ronnie. At first he is unaware that he has Schizophrenia, but as the film progresses, he starts to realizes his situation. Edgar eventually looses his delusion and starts to wonder where Ronnie has gone. This leads to a confrontation with his mum and Edgar having a sudden realization that Ronnie is in his head.

Ronnie: Because Ronnie is a delusion created by Edgar, he shares much of the same personality traits. There are some instances where Edgar becomes Ronnie, looking at himself and this is where we really see Ronnie shine. Ronnie can be more sociable than Edgar, and this is because Ronnie is a projection of what Edgar whish’s he could be. However Ronnie shares the same opinions as Edgar and thinks in the same way due to the nature of his existence.

Derrick: Derrick is the dominate member of the group. He is a die hard football fan, as are the rest of his mates. Derrick is always looking for a good laugh, but can show a caring side when need, much like with Edgar. However he is unaware that Edgar has schizophrenia, but nether the less, looks out for him.

A short summary of my opinion as to why short films are made and why it could be a useful tool for us.

After reading the article in ‘The Telegraph’ entitled ‘ Short films that launched big names’ it is easy to see the importance of short films to new film makers. Creating short films is a quick and cost effective way to gain producers attention, and can often lead to bigger projects. Short films such as ‘Alive in Joburg’ and ‘Jesus vs. Frosty’ have been the starting points for directors such as ‘Neill Blomkamp’ (creator of hit movie ‘District 9’), ‘Matt Stone’ and ‘Trey Parker’ (the guys behind the hit U.S show ‘South Park’), all well respected film makers by critics and fans alike.

But it is also true that film trailers can lead to production of a film. The film ‘Machete’ was based on a fake trailer for a film of the same name that was shown in the middle of the double bill film ‘Grindhouse’. Although the two films were directed by Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino, the trailers in the middle included Edgar Wright’s ‘Don’t’, a tribute to Hammer horrors of the Seventies, Eli Roth’s seasonal slasher Thanksgiving and Rodriguez’s Machete. However it was Rodriguez’s film that gained the biggest public reception, thus the film was made. However this was not his first film.
